Gentoo installation with screenshots




















Boot Gentoo Live. After Gentoo DVD content is loaded you will be prompted with Gentoo main login screen which provides the default credentials for live session. Login Screen. Open Terminal. If you are behind a DHCP server, your network card should be automatically configured for you else use net-setup or pppoe-setup and pppoe-start commands or dhcpcd eth0 replace it with your NIC plugged cable in case your NIC has problems with automatically detect DHCP settings.

For static network configurations use the following commands but replace IPs according to your network settings. Configure Network Connection. Verify Network Connection. To create system disk partition switch to root account and run Parted utility with optimum alignment. Create Disk Partitions. Use print to show your disk partition current state and remove any partitions if case using rm partition number command.

After Portage finishes synchronization select a profile for your future system destination. Select Profile. Set System Time Zone. Uncomment your system locales. Open Locals. Set System Locals. Update Profile. Gentoo provides two ways of building and installing Linux Kernel: using a manual kernel configuration or use an automated process by issuing genkernel command which builds a generic kernel based on the one used by installation Live DVD.

On this tutorial the second method will be used because the first method requires advanced knowledge of your system components and building a kernel with manual configurations. Now compile your kernel using genkernel command, which automatically builds the kernel with the default hardware settings detected by DVD installer at boot time. Be aware that this process can take a lot of time depending on your hardware resources.

Compile Kernel. Compiling Kernel. If you want to manually modify kernel configuration you can use genkernel —menuconfig all command. Next step is to configure fstab file to automatically mount system partitions during boot process. At the botton of the file insert the following lines. Mount System Partitions. After you complete with disk slices use print to see your final partition layout should look like in the image below and quit parted. After selecting the Tarball press [ Enter ] key, select OK , wait for the download to finish and quit links.

On the next step, extract Stage 3 Tarball archive using the following command. Now you have a minimal Gentoo environment installed on your computer but the installation process is far from being finished.

The amount of time and punishment it takes to learn the Linux kernel, File system, Daemons, Partitions etc..

A newb like me would rather just based a distro on an existing one. You need to use the SU or root password. You forgot to include the step for mounting the partitions. There is just a screenshot but you skipped that step in your guide.

I finally found it in the tiny font of the screenshot. Good effort though but you should really fix that if you are going to call it an installation guide because without the step it makes it awfully confusing considering there is a step along with each screenshot for everything else.
